Deana

The afternoon was starting to drift into evening and Agnes hadn’t returned from the crow’s nest. Deana pushed her meal around her plate. Her appetite had fled sometime around midafternoon. The shrouded one’s visit still bothered her; the message of the shell floated in shadowy scenes across her mind that gave her a headache whenever she tried to focus on them. And despite Nari’s healing, her fingers still ached as though shards of shell remained trapped under her skin.

“You should eat something,” Dara said, resting her hand on Deana’s arm.

Deana turned and gave her a small smile before placing her fork down. “I’ll be alright. I’m not hungry.”

Pippa made a noise, drawing Deana’s attention to her, but she just dipped her head and shared a look with Kiki. Something seemed to pass between them, and then Kiki met Deana’s eye and gave her a warm grin.

“I wonder where Agnes has gotten to,” Elijah said. “It’s not like her to miss a meal.” He had been in the hold most of the day working on a map, his song permeating the air around him. It was soft but far-reaching and spoke of a curious desire to discover.

“I’m sure she’ll be along shortly,” Wren said, but she cast a long look down the dock that suggested she wasn’t certain. “Varlan will be here soon. Maybe she’s with him. Or if she’s gotten caught up with her work for Kent, he will know.”

But Agnes wasn’t with Varlan when he came stalking along the dock a short while later. He hurried up the gangplank and dropped onto the deck. His warm gaze moved over them, the corner of his mouth tightening as he took in each face in turn.

“Agnes isn’t with you?” Elijah asked, standing.

Varlan completely stilled and his song gave a little swoop that spoke of panic. “No, I haven’t seen her all day.”

“Should we go look for her?” Deana asked as she stood beside Elijah.

“There’s no point. We know exactly where she is,” Pippa said.

Kiki nodded. “Kent must have figured out she was planning on sabotaging his war machine. She’s probably in the cell next to Bran.”

“How would he have figured it out, though?” Wren asked. “She had that charm to block mind magic on her, didn’t she?” She glanced at Varlan, and he gave a quick nod. “So Savita wouldn’t have been able to pick the knowledge from her mind.”

“It is a mistake to underestimate Savita,” Deana said.

“Everyone just remain calm. We don’t know for sure that Kent has Agnes,” Gendry said, his voice steady as he lifted a hand. “She might have gotten caught up on some other business. We should send someone to check—” His eyes narrowed as they landed on something on the dock.

Deana turned to investigate.

A blond guard was hurrying towards the Queen. He skipped up the gangplank and fell into position next to Varlan.

“We have a problem,” he said before anyone else could speak. “Kent threw Agnes into one of the crow’s nest cells.”

Varlan’s hands tightened into fists.
